Overview

Documentary film about Käthe and AMICI
In the spring of 1995, AMICI, a dance company made up of disabled and non- disabled people, set off for Berlin to perform their stage work "Rückblick." “Rückblick” is AMICI’s masterpiece about the life of the German artist Käthe Kollwitz, who lived through two world wars. The film begins at Heathrow Airport, and follows rehearsal scenes, backstage, travels, and performance highlights, also following Kathe's struggles, suffering, and life through her diary.

Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945)

Käthe Kollwitz was a German artist of the 20th century. The motif of her work was always the image of ordinary people suffering from poverty and social contradictions, and from war. She herself lost her son and grandson in two wars, and many of her paintings depict the suffering and struggles of motherhood. Throughout her life, Käthe found beauty in people oppressed by war, poverty and social contradictions, and continued to live with them and paint their lives.

AMICI Dance Theatre Company (1980-)
The AMICI Dance Theatre Company was founded in London in 1980 by dance educator and choreographer Wolfgang Stange. A key feature of AMICI is that it is an integrated dance theatre company of disabled and non-disabled people. AMICI is based on Stange's dance workshops for disabled and non-disabled people. In the workshops, participants find beauty in the movements of people with disabilities that are usually denied, share them and transform them into dance. At the same time, they find beauty in the individuality and body movements of all participants, whether they have a disability or not, and transform them into dance. AMICI's stage productions can be described as an evolution of such ideas and methods. Since the 1980s, AMICI has been creating stage productions, such as Rückblick, that appeal to diversity, equality, inclusion and peace. And even today, AMICI continues to find beauty in people oppressed by social contradictions and prejudices, living with them and creating their works.

Käthe and AMICI, a journey to their soul

Käthe Kollwitz wrote in her diary. “No matter how many war pictures I paint, the war will never end...” And she laments and suffers from her own powerlessness. Has there ever been a time in our history without conflicts, civil wars and wars? Domination, oppression, control and manipulation by force... Today we are still angry about the contradictions, injustice and inhumanity of our society, and we lament and suffer about our own powerlessness. But at the same time, we believe that despite our sense of powerlessness, we must continue to raise our small voices. Like Käthe and AMICI. The film "Journey to Käthe" tries to get closer to the two souls of Käthe and AMICI through the film. It is a documentary that prays for diversity and coexistence, non-war and peace throughout in all times.
